Based in the heart of Houston, we care for more multiple births than any other hospital in the region.
In the last decade, we have delivered more than 2,800 sets of multiples – and, in one memorable day, three mothers each delivered triplets.
The Woman's Hospital of Texas provides comprehensive, supportive care to mothers who are expecting twins, triplets, or more. Our expert team of medical providers specializes in care for women with multiple gestation pregnancies and offers maternal-fetal medicine consultations. Our goal is to ensure that your pregnancy is a positive, exciting experience and most of all safe.
Care and Management of Multiple Pregnancy
Our multiples’ program and services foster a family-centered environment where proven practices in maternal-fetal medicine give women and their babies the specialized care they require.
Multiples' Clinic
Mothers who discover they are having multiples may be referred to our program for further testing to determine whether or not the pregnancy is likely to develop complications. If so, mothers consult with our maternal-fetal medicine specialists. Women who are carrying multiples can come in at 14-weeks for a one-time visit that includes:
- Maternal-fetal medicine consultations
- Level II ultrasound for growth assessment and detection of congenital abnormalities
- Genetic counseling
- Personalized nutritional counseling
- Management of the medical complications of pregnancy
- Lactation support for breastfeeding multiples
Antepartum Care for High Risk Multiple Gestation Pregnancy
Multiple-gestation pregnancies are often considered high-risk. Our Multiples’ Clinic provides valuable assistance to mothers and children well beyond the medical aspects of pregnancy.
Many mothers of multiples require early bed rest and sometimes early admission to the hospital for monitoring. Our Antepartum Unit provides expectant mothers with a home-away-from-home. We can help with issues common to multiple births, such as:
- Multiple baby monitoring
- Pre-term labor
- Pregnancy-induced hypertension
- Gestational diabetes, chronic diabetes, and
- Premature rupture of membranes
Our Multiple Gestation Pregnancy Services
Multiples often encounter challenges like prematurity and low birth weight, which means they sometimes require care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We are among a select number of hospitals in Texas that provide the highest level of care available for high-risk newborns who are premature, critically-ill or have a life threatening health condition.
We provide 24/7 emergency transport care for mothers who have high-risk pregnancies and for babies who are born prematurely or are sick and need emergency transport services to our hospital. Our maternal transport team will bring you directly to The Woman’s Hospital of Texas with all the medical support you need, including a critical-care paramedic and an experienced labor/delivery nurse. Our neonatal/NICU transport team has specialized skills and equipment to care for newborns in need of NICU services while they are being transported to the hospital. We travel with a neonatal-nurse practitioner, a neonatal-transport nurse, and a respiratory therapist.
Our educators recognize that mothers expecting multiples have a different set of challenges and offer a variety of classes and support groups to help support a healthy multiple gestational pregnancy. Multiples-specific classes covering childbirth, breastfeeding, care and more. In addition, nutrition education is provided by Registered Dietitians who are part of our Diabetes Self Management Program. They specialize in preconception nutrition, pregnancy meal planning, caloric intake with multiples, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and management of type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
