Patient Education

The Education Department at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas offers a variety of classes, support groups, and tours to help families prepare for the physical and emotional changes that come with pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.

We recommend completing all classes no later than the 36th week of pregnancy, or the 24th week of pregnancy if you're expecting multiples.

Classes fill quickly, so be sure to register early. If you can’t find a class at a convenient time, you can try one of our online classes. If you need to cancel or make changes to your registration, please notify us as soon as possible.
A 25 percent service charge for class cancellations applies.

We provide free parking during classes and support group meetings.

Hospital Tours

Childbirth classes include a tour, and we also provide tours for those who are not taking classes. Meet in the West Tower lobby, and we'll take you to see our Labor & Delivery and Postpartum Units.

Adult Tour:

For participants 13 years of age and older. If you wish to bring your younger child along, see Toddler Tour or Sibling Class with Hospital Tour.
When: There are tours at various times on Saturdays, Sundays and Tuesdays.
Cost: Free, but registration is required.

Toddler Tour:

For children ages 18-months to three years, we offer a brief, age-appropriate visit to see where Mommy will be having her baby. Children receive a "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" t-shirt, and parents receive all of the information provided on the adult tours.

Sibling Class with Hospital Tour:

Children will learn how important older siblings are, to be safe with a newborn baby, and to hold a baby by practicing with a doll. They will also receive a "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" t-shirt. After the 30-minute class, siblings and parents will visit the Labor & Delivery and Postpartum Units.

Breastfeeding Classes and Support Groups

Breastfeeding can be both rewarding and challenging. Learning the basics puts you and your baby on the path to success. We strongly encourage attendance by your spouse or support person. We are pleased to offer an online Breastfeeding class:

Free Online Breastfeeding Class

It would be ideal to take this course online and then attend a live class, where you will:

  • Learn how to get off to a great start while in the hospital
  • Practice positioning and latch-on techniques
  • Learn how to express, store, and prepare breast milk
  • Learn how to start breastfeeding if your baby is in the NICU
  • Discuss common misconceptions

Live Breastfeeding Class:

  • When: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Saturdays or 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month

Expecting twins, triplets, or more? There's a class for you, but we require that you complete a basic breastfeeding class first. After that, please join us.

Support

Led by experienced Lactation Educators, the New Mom's Lactation Support Group is for women with newborns up to six-weeks-old. Receive assistance with latch-on, ask questions about breastfeeding, weigh your baby, and share concerns with other mothers. Female support people only. No older children, please.

  • When: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Mondays (except holidays)
  • 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Thursdays (except holidays)
    2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., 4th Saturday of the month (except holidays) 
  • Cost: Free and parking will be validated

La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support, and encouragement to women who choose to breastfeed. La Leche League of Bellaire/West University meets monthly at The Woman's Hospital of Texas.

Grandparents Class

For grandparents-to-be, this class will bring you up to date on current baby care practices and help with the transition to your new role. Each registration covers a couple, so any two grandparents may attend together. Join us! Your kids will thank you!

Childbirth Classes

It's time to prepare for the physical and psychological changes associated with pregnancy, birth, and parenthood. Bring your support person and two pillows for our Prepared Childbirth class. A book with links to Web content is included for you to take home.

The 4-week, 2-week and Fast Track classes all cover the following objectives:

  • Tour the hospital
  • Discomforts of pregnancy
  • Preterm labor and what to do
  • Pain medications for labor and birth
  • Assisted vaginal delivery (episiotomy, vacuum extractor, forceps)
  • Cesarean Birth
  • Postpartum recovery and lifestyle changes
  • Natural labor and coping techniques
  • Signs of labor and the labor process
  • Fetal monitoring
  • Signs of preterm labor

Mini-Childbirth Class

A tour of the maternity units and a brief overview of the labor process and pain medication options.

Labor Support Skills Workshop

A 3-hour session to learn and practice natural coping measures for labor. Could serve as a supplement to a childbirth class or a refresher for those who have given birth before.

Infant Care Classes and Parenting Support

We know babies don’t come with guidebooks, so we provide some helpful classes. Once you have delivered your baby we will continue to be here for you with free support groups. Getting out of the house with a baby is hard enough, so you don’t even have to sign up, just come!

Classes:

Life with Baby includes training on these topics, and a book to take home:

  • Newborn appearance and characteristics
  • Hospital nursery routines
  • Diapering and bathing
  • Infant illness and when to call the doctor
  • Safety basics
  • Feeding
  • Infant sleep states
  • Coping with crying

Life with Baby is offered as a one-day session or a two-class series:

  • When: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturdays
    • or 6:30 p.m. – 8:45 p.m., two consecutive Wednesdays

Support:

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Parent Group provides important emotional support and education.

  • When: 6:45 p.m. – 7:45 p.m., first Wednesday of each month (except holidays)
    • or 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., all other Wednesdays (except holidays)
  • Cost: Free

Birth, Baby, and Beyond is an informal meeting of expectant mothers, fathers, new parents, and babies up to one-year of age. Discuss issues such as sleeping, crying, feeding, and family dynamics. Some weeks feature guest speakers.

  • Cost: Free, and parking will be validated

Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression Support Group is for women facing emotional challenges related to pregnancy or new motherhood. Join us for discussions about the baby blues, anxiety, self-care while caring for a child, relationship changes, and how to handle daily stress.

  • When: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m., Mondays (except holidays)
  • Cost: Free and parking will be validated

Expecting Multiples?

When three mothers of triplets all delivered on the same day, we were ready. The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, with the cooperation of the Houston Perinatal Associates, handles more multiple births than any other hospital in the region.

Our Multiples Clinic is a family-centered environment where proven practices in maternal-fetal medicine give multiple births' parents and children the specialized care they require. Come in at 14-weeks for:

  • Maternal-fetal medicine consultations from HPA physicians
  • Level II ultrasound
  • Genetic counseling
  • Personalized nutritional counseling

Marvelous Multiples Class:

Join us at our Marvelous Multiples class, where you will learn everything our regular childbirth class has to offer, in addition to a focus on your pending special delivery. You will receive a book and plenty of resources to take home. We recommend that you attend early in the second trimester of your pregnancy.

Healthy eating and consuming adequate calories is even more important for a woman expecting twins, triplets, or more. This class will provide the following information:

  • Healthy Eating
  • Maximizing Calories
  • Consuming Adequate Protein, Calcium and Fiber
  • Patients Receive a Personalized Meal Plan
  • This class is free for moms delivering at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas.

Diabetes Management

The Woman's Hospital of Texas has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for quality self-management education. Our classes, taught by certified diabetes educators, as well as Registered Dietitians are specifically designed to meet the needs of women with diabetes prior to and during pregnancy.

Our Class List:

    • The ABC’s of Diabetes and Pregnancy—3 hours

This class instructs participants in the management of diabetes. It is intended for the Newly diagnosed GDM, or Type 2 DM with no prior education. It includes:

      • Meal Planning (personalized meal plan is provided)
      • Exercise 
      • Stress management
      • Glucose Meter Instruction: Participants learn how to use the meter, and how to perform quality control checks. They are taught to record and analyze glucose results over time for better diabetes management
      • Discussion also includes labor and delivery, infant feeding, postpartum issues, six-week blood glucose follow-up and planning for future pregnancies.
      • Dietary Guidelines for Women With Gestational Diabetes
    • Diabetes Fast Track—1 ½ hours

This class instructs participants on the basics of the management of diabetes. It is intended for patient’s that cannot attend the full class due to financial or time constraints, those that have a history of GDM, or has Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. It includes:

      • Meal Planning (personalized meal plan is provided)
      • Glucose Meter Instruction: Participants learn how to use the meter, and how to perform quality control checks. They are taught to record and analyze glucose results over time for better diabetes management. 
    • Diabetes Refresher—1 hour

This class instructs participants on the basics of the management of diabetes. It is intended for patient’s that cannot attend any other class due to financial or time constraints, those that have a history of GDM, or has Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, IGT/Abnormal glucose, and PCOS. It includes:

    • Meal Planning (personalized meal plan is provided)

Nutrition Education

    • Weight Management and Nutrition—group class 1 ½ -2 hours; 1:1 ~1 hour

This class instructs participants on eating a healthy, balanced diet and provides a personalized meal plan. Instruction is provided on portion sizes, label reading, dining out, and artificial sweeteners. This class meets all nutritional needs including healthy eating, weight management, preconception, pregnancy and postpartum concerns. These classes are also great for patients managing PCOS and Diabetes, as well as for women expecting Multiples, who want to maximize their nutritional intake.

E-Learning

We are pleased to offer online education as an alternative for those who cannot attend a conventional childbirth or breastfeeding class due to bed rest, scheduling conflicts, travel, or time constraints. These interactive, web-based programs include animated illustrations, videos, voice-overs, and games. You will receive a book and have access to the program for eight weeks from first login. A childbirth educator and lactation consultant will be available to answer your questions by email or phone.

Online Childbirth Class:

This online program covers pregnancy discomforts, labor support techniques, the process of labor and birth, pain medications, cesarean birth and postpartum changes, as well as some basics of breastfeeding and newborn care. You will receive a companion book by mail.

Free Online Breastfeeding Class:
