Over 650 former NICU graduates, families and caretakers in attendance
Houston, TX – After a few years of limiting in-person offerings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Woman’s Hospital of Texas hosted its annual NICU Reunion at the Houston Zoo on Sunday, March 26.
The Houston Zoo was the perfect place for NICU graduates and their families to ‘go wild’ in keeping with the event’s theme. This year’s reunion was the hospital’s first full-scale event since 2019.
One of the most anticipated days of the year, the NICU Reunion allows the hospital’s past patients and their families to reunite with their caretakers including nurses, physicians, therapists, child life specialists, patient navigators and more. The Woman’s Hospital of Texas colleagues spend a significant amount of time with their NICU patients and their families while in the hospital, and they always look forward to seeing how they are doing after they are discharged from the hospital. One of the oldest NICU graduates in attendance is now 23 years old.
Among the over 650 excited attendees was the Busby family, whose lives have been chronicled on the TLC reality series OutDaughtered from 2016 - 2021. Danielle and Adam Busby are the parents of six daughters, five of whom are quintuplets born at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas in 2015. The quintuplets are the first all-girl quintuplets in America. Danielle delivered her five daughters by c-section at 28 weeks and they all spent numerous weeks in the NICU at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas.
“It’s the NICU Reunion and it’s something we would not miss,” said Danielle. “I was so excited to see the invitation come through my email and have the opportunity to bring the girls, who are almost eight years old now. We just love to come and see the faces of the staff, the nurses and the doctors. Right when we came through the gate, we saw the Level III NICU nurse who cared for three of the girls. We couldn’t be more thankful for the care we received at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas.”
“I am incredibly proud of the work our amazing physicians, NICU staff and support colleagues do for our most critical newborns,” said Jeanna Bamburg, CEO of The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. “At The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, we care like family and are committed to providing the most advanced neonatal care, while supporting parents and loved ones along the way. I’m glad so many families and hospital colleagues joined us today. It’s a testament to the compassionate care our team provides and the family atmosphere our patients experience during their stay.”
ShaDiamond, Dwight, III and Dwight Oakley, Jr. attend the 2023 NICU Reunion hosted by The Woman’s Hospital of Texas at the Houston Zoo. Dwight III spent several weeks in the NICU.
