Delivering Multiples for Houston

No one in Houston has more experience delivering multiples than The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. Over the last 10 years, we have delivered more than 2,800 sets of multiples—from twins and triplets to sextuplets. When 3 mothers of triplets all delivered on the same day, our experienced staff was ready.

Multiples Program

We foster a family-centered environment where proven practices in maternal-fetal medicine give women and their multiple babies the specialized care they require, including:

  • Maternal-fetal medicine consultations through Houston Perinatal Associates
  • Level II ultrasound for growth assessment and detection of congenital abnormalities
  • Genetic counseling
  • Personalized nutritional counseling
  • Lactation support for breastfeeding multiples
  • Management of medical complications of pregnancy

Specialized Care, Pre-delivery

Many mothers of multiples require early bed rest, and sometimes, early admission to the hospital for monitoring. Our Antepartum Unit provides expectant mothers with a home-away-from-home with the extra support of maternal-fetal medicine specialists. We can help with issues common to multiple births, such as:

  • Multiple baby monitoring
  • Pre-term labor
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Gestational diabetes and chronic diabetes and type II diabetes
  • Premature rupture of membranes

Labor and delivery is right down the hall when you’re ready to deliver your twins, triplets or more.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Because multiples often face challenges like prematurity and low birth weight, they sometimes require care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The Woman’s Hospital of Texas offers multiples sophisticated Level II and Level III NICU care with the extra monitoring and interventional medicine when it is needed.

Extra Education

Those expecting multiples are encouraged to take classes early in the second trimester (13-16 weeks). Woman’s offers a variety of educational opportunities especially for parents of multiples. Mothers on bedrest in our Antepartum Unit have the option of these classes coming to them. Learn more about multiples education for parents:
