Multiples Education

Twins, Triplets and Beyond

The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, with the cooperation of Houston Perinatal Associates (HPA), cares for more multiple births than anyone in the region. We realize that no two babies are exactly alike—twins or not—so our team is always ready with compassionate, leading-edge care in situations large or very small. Because here, three isn’t a crowd—it’s a blessing.

Why Families Trust Us

Over the last ten years, Woman’s has had the privilege of delivering over 2,800 sets of multiples—from twins and triplets all the way up to sextuplets. When three mothers of triplets all delivered on the same day, we were ready. Simply put, our physicians and nurses are the most experienced you’ll find when it comes to caring for mothers and their babies.

Multiples Program

We foster a family-centered environment where proven practices in maternal-fetal medicine give multiple births the specialized care they require, including:

  • Maternal-fetal medicine consultations from the HPA physicians, a 20+ year partnership
  • Level II ultrasound
  • Genetic counseling
  • Personalized nutritional counseling
  • Antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care

Antepartum Care

Many mothers of multiples require early bed rest, and sometimes, early admission to the hospital for monitoring. Our 48-bed Antepartum Unit, located in the hospital’s new West Tower, provides expectant mothers with a home-away-from-home. We can help with:

  • Multiple baby monitoring
  • Pre-term labor
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Premature rupture of membranes

Most of our antepartum patients require monitoring for both contractions and fetal heart rate. This is done in the comfort of your room. For imaging needs, the hospital’s Radiology Department is there to provide expert consultation.

Our antepartum patients enjoy modern amenities in the comfort of a private room, including a comfortable bed, couch, TV, DVD player, and both patient and fetal monitoring equipment. Wi-Fi is available, and patients can check out a laptop upon request.

For an additional daily fee, our suites are available on a limited basis. They feature hotel-like accommodations with gourmet cuisine options. Your stay will include on-call room service, a remarkably diverse and delicious menu to choose from, plush robes and slippers, complimentary valet parking, and so much more.

Labor & Delivery

At Woman’s, we are very proud to say we’re one of the only hospitals in the country that can boast a 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio in our Labor and Delivery Unit. That means throughout their entire shift, nurses can tend to the needs of mother and baby without the distraction of other patients or responsibilities. They are only there to ensure the well-being of you and your baby, offering compassion, support, and expertise.

Our hospital has 35 labor and delivery rooms and six operating rooms used for cesarean sections. We also have a nine-bed Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for mothers recovering from c-sections.

We are open-minded when customizing care to the desires of the mother and needs of the baby. That is to say, there is no set labor and delivery process. If you prefer natural birth to an epidural, we support that decision. If you are interested in trying alternative labor techniques like birthing balls or massage strategies, we support that decision as well.

This is your day. We’re just here to provide any support necessary.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Because multiples often face challenges like prematurity and low birth weight, they sometimes require care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). At The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, our 124-bed, level II and level III NICUs offer sophisticated monitoring and interventional medicine for infants who require it.

Our NICU is designed to accommodate the needs of your babies, as well as your desire to spend time with the new additions to your family. Privacy screens create a comfortable environment for skin-to-skin holding, breastfeeding, and breast pumping at your babies’ sides. Private tours are available.

Education

The Woman’s Hospital of Texas provides a range of classes and support groups for new parents and their families. Popular topics include infant CPR, breastfeeding basics, baby care, and general childbirth preparation.

For parents expecting more than one baby, our Marvelous Multiples® class is an all-day experience designed to provide a fun and informative introduction to the adventure ahead. In addition to a hospital tour, you’ll review:

  • Nutrition and stress management for a healthy multiple pregnancy
  • Preterm labor
  • Fetal monitoring
  • Vaginal/Cesarean Birth overview
  • Postpartum recovery and lifestyle changes
  • Practical care challenges of caring for more than one newborn
  • Community resources for families with multiples

Those expecting multiples are encouraged to take classes early in the second trimester (13-16 weeks). Breastfeeding Multiples is a 1½ hour supplement to the basic breastfeeding course. Call 713-791-7495 for more information, or visit www.womanshospital.com to register online.

Our hospital is also proud to help sponsor Space City Triplets, a support group for families of triplets or more in the Greater Houston Area. Email houstontriplets@yahoo.com to inquire about joining.

Nutritional Counseling

Throughout a woman’s pregnancy, nutrition is a key to ensure that mom and her babies remain healthy.

At The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, our Registered Dietitians specialize in pre-conception nutritional counseling, pregnancy meal planning, and family meal planning. They also explain the role nutrition plays in the following:

  • Caloric intake with multiples
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

Determining how many calories is essential for you and your babies can be confusing. Let us help you figure out what is right for you. Call 713-791-7559 to ask questions or register for a class.

Our Registered Dietitians are part of our Diabetes Self-Management Program, which has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

Our Philosophy

Every day, twins or triplets (or more!) are born at our hospital, and we’re honored to help facilitate those magical moments. At our heart, we’re committed to providing your family with the most technically advanced care in line with medicine’s best practices.

But that’s not to say we follow a script with each pregnancy, because each one is different. It’s our belief that pushing should be at the time of delivery, not for when expressing how your family wants to proceed with something.

Let our family care for yours.

With speciality clinics throughout Greater Houston, The Woman’s Hospital of Texas has partnered with Houston Perinatal Associates (HPA) to become the regional leader when caring for women pregnant with twins, triplets, and beyond.
