Care, Policies and Responsibilities
Parent Responsibilities
When you visit the NICU, please stay at your baby's bedside only. All the babies and their families need privacy. You may read your baby's chart if the baby's doctor is available at the bedside to answer any questions you may have. When you want to read the chart, please do so at a time arranged with your baby's doctor. Copies of the chart may be obtained from the medical records department after your infant's discharge from the hospital. A fee for copies of the chart will be requested. Please remember to notify your employer or insurance carrier of your baby's birth as soon as possible. They will let you know what papers must be signed in order for your baby to be added to your insurance policy. A representative from the business office will be available to help if you have any questions. For information about your baby's birth certificate, you may call the Vital Statistics Coordinator at (713) 790-1234 extension 3184.
Texas state law requires that all infants riding in a car must be in an approved car seat. You must have a car seat in the car at the time your baby goes home.
Visiting Your Baby or Visitor Policy
Parents and grandparents are encouraged to visit as often as possible. Please let other family members and friends know that they cannot visit due to the risk of exposure to infection for your baby. Two people may visit the bedside at a time. To protect the privacy and confidentiality of all our families, please refrain from asking questions about other babies in the unit.
Visiting is allowed daily except for these times when the bedside nurses give report:
6:30 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.
2:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.
10:45 p.m. - 11:45 p.m.
During emergency situations or when special procedures are being performed, the units will be closed to visitors.
Siblings TWO years and older may visit for 20 minutes Wednesday's between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and Sundays between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Brothers and sisters cannot visit if they have a temperature over 100.4 degrees F., if they are sick, have a rash or if they have been exposed to any communicable diseases, such as chicken pox, measles, etc.
You may bring a camera or video camera to the NICU to take pictures of your baby. Please photograph only your baby. If your baby will be in the NICU for an extended period of time, you may want to designate a certain day each week as "Picture day." This enables you to see your baby's growth and improvement. Please turn off cell phones in the NICU.
